PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland Fire crews extinguished a debris fire at the Schnitzer Steel facility in North Portland Thursday evening.
Portland Fire began responding to the facility off North Lombard Street near Pier Park just before 4 p.m. The agency said that a large debris pile — comprised of "combustible" mixed metals from an industrial shredder, along with petroleum products, foam and upholstery — caught fire at the facility.
Crews were able to extinguish the fire about an hour later. The incident commander of the fire said staff at Schnitzer Steel used their heavy excavation equipment to help firefighters put out the fire.
There were no immediate reports of injuries and the structure of the building was not affected.
The fire produced a large amount of smoke due to the burning metals, Portland Fire said.
“Schnitzer Steel staff did an amazing job in assisting us during this incident. Skillfully utilizing their heavy excavation equipment in close coordination with our crews, they provided us with invaluable assistance in extinguishing this fire," Portland Fire said. "We are grateful for their efforts.”
