PORTLAND, Oregon — From oak flooring to benches, a lot of new components are going into the Portland International Airport's main terminal, but one thing is staying the same: its iconic carpet.
Last week, crews installed 1,000 square feet of carpet in the mezzanine level of the main terminal — a move that ensures travelers will still be able to take shoe selfies while passing through the airport. The new carpet is located in a pre-security seating area. About 5,000 square feet of additional carpet will be installed in other areas during phase two of construction next year, according to the Port of Portland.
Allison Ferre, the media relations manager for the Port of Portland, has said the local community made it clear that they want the famous carpet pattern to find a home in the main terminal.
The Port of Portland expects to open the new main terminal in August. It was initially scheduled for late May.
When the main terminal opens, travelers will also see sections of carpet placed mostly in rest areas and where local musicians will be able to perform. There will be a total of nearly 6,000 square feet of carpet installed by a company based in the Pacific Northwest. Other flooring will mostly be hard surface, either terrazzo or Oregon-grown White Oak.
