4 Clark County deputies identified in shooting that left one suspect dead after alleged armed carjacking

The shooting happened in the American Legion building at Northeast 20th Avenue. The sheriff's office said a second carjacking suspect was arrested.

CLARK COUNTY, Wash — The Clark County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed Wednesday that 41-year-old Benjamin Steven Woods from Prineville, Ore. was shot and killed by Clark County Sheriff's deputies on Saturday following an alleged armed carjacking by two people. The Clark County Sheriff's Office previously said that the other alleged carjacker had been arrested.

Vancouver police identified Friday, the deputies involved in the shooting as 23-year-veteran Jim Payne and seven-year-veteran Michael Gonzalez. The other two deputies who are named as witnesses to the shooting are Sergeant Fred Harrison and Deputy Enrique Cordero. All four deputies remain on critical leave.

On April 13, deputies responded to a call about a carjacking in Hazel Dell at 10:38 a.m., according to a CCSO news release, with the victim saying that a man and a woman had stolen his van before leaving the scene. A witness said that the man had a handgun.

Shortly after, deputies arrived at 14300 Northeast 20th Avenue near Goodwill in Salmon Creek, where witnesses said a man and a woman had attempted to carjack a vehicle with a person inside. The descriptions of the suspects matched the ones seen in Hazel Dell, according to the CCSO.

Deputies then set up a containment area to search for the suspects. They then located the stolen van from the Hazel Dell carjacking behind the American Legion at 14011 Northeast 20th Avenue, CCSO said.

Deputies saw the male suspect enter the building and confronted him, where "an officer-involved shooting took place" around 11:30 a.m., killing the man, according to the CCSO. No deputies were injured.

Deputies were searching for the woman, then arrested her around 3:25 p.m. Vancouver police identified the woman Monday as Lyndsey D. Jones, adding that she'd been arrested on a residential burglary charge while the larger investigation continues.

The Southwest Washington Independent Investigation Team (SWIIRT), led by the Vancouver Police Department, will be investigating the shooting. Body camera footage will be released.

Earlier on Saturday, CCSO been reported that "deputies have been involved" in a shooting in the Salmon Creek area. The shooting happened near the Walgreens at 139th Street and 20th Avenue.
