Browns' Johnny Manziel fined $12,000 by NFL for flipping bird

QB Johnny Manziel is currently the Browns' backup.

Johnny Manziel's parting gift for losing out on the Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback job? How about a $12,000 fine.

That's how much the NFL fined Manziel for being caught making an obscene gesture toward the Washington Redskins sideline Monday night, a person with knowledge of the fine told USA TODAY Sports on Friday.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the fine hadn't been announced.

It was a rough night all around for Manziel, the much-hyped first-round draft pick who finished 7-of-16 passing for 65 yards and a touchdown in the Browns' 24-23 loss.

Coach Mike Pettine announced Wednesday the Browns were going with journeyman Brian Hoyer as their starting quarterback instead.

Manziel can afford the fine. He got a $4,318,980 signing bonus on the four-year rookie contract he signed in June and already has multiple endorsements.
