Portland’s cost of living increase is among highest in the nation

The cost of living surges in Portland and Seattle ranked among the top three in large metro markets, according to a recent report.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Living in the Pacific Northwest has only gotten more and more expensive, so much so that the cost of living surges in Portland and Seattle ranked among the top three in large metro markets, according to a recent report.

From 2010 to 2020, the cost of living in the Portland metro area rose 22%, while the Seattle area's rose by 23%, according to a Filterbuy report. Researchers looked at cities with more than 100,000 residents and grouped metroplexes into three categories: small, midsize and large. Among the big cities, Seattle ranked No. 1, Denver was No. 2 and Portland was No. 3.

Over the past decade, the report noted, many of the states with rising costs of living were economically prosperous regions that have experienced an influx of residents moving for high-paying jobs. That includes states like Oregon, Washington and Massachusetts.

Filterbuy determined the rankings using a variety of variables, including the cost of goods (up 3.8% in the 10-year span in Portland), utilities (down 9.3% ) and housing (up 30.5%).
