PORTLAND, Ore. — A 25-year-old man was killed when the car he was riding in crashed into a power pole in Northeast Portland late Thursday night.

The driver, 29-year-old Anthony L. Soto of Portland, was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants, second-degree manslaughter, reckless driving and reckless endangering.

The crash happened at 11:42 p.m. at Northeast Sandy Boulevard and Killingsworth Street.

Investigators said Soto was speeding in a Chevrolet Tahoe when he crashed into a power pole, shearing it off at the base.

Soto was injured in the crash but is expected to survive, police said.

The crash caused enough damage to the power pole to threaten power lines. Utility crews made repairs overnight.

The name of the man who died has not been released.

The crash is Portland's 25th traffic fatality in 2021, police said. At this time last year there had been 13 traffic deaths.
