PORTLAND, Ore. — It really pays to be in the health care field. Although, to be fair, it actually, by one measure doesn't pay as much as it did last year.

The latest data available from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, for the 12-month period ending in May 2019, indicates that of the 25 top-paying professions, those who occupy jobs in the health care industry comprise 10 such spots.

Which is down from last year, when 14 of those prime jobs held top 25 positions.

We decided to expand our list this year to include the top 35 paying jobs. In so doing, we discovered that that's exactly the cut-off point for positions that pay median salaries of $100,000 or more.

The Business Journal crunched data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics that indicate the top-paying Oregon jobs, by virtue of their median salaries. The figures cover the Portland metropolitan statistical area, which includes Hillsboro and Vancouver, Wash.

Tidily enough, the top 35 slots all paid $100,000 or more. Jobs lagging just behind those include:

  • Human resources managers, with median salaries of $99,800
  • Podiatrists, $99,370
  • Information security analysts, $98,300
  • Power distributors and dispatchers, $98,020
  • Environmental engineers, $97,720
  • Electrical power-line installers and repairers, $96,340
  • Database administrators and architects, $96,070
