Oregon COVID-19 updates, Oct. 1: Parents call for in-person school option

PORTLAND, Ore. — Cases of COVID-19 began popping up in the United States in January. The first case in Oregon was reported on Feb. 28.

8:05 p.m.

  • The Oregon Health Authority released suggestions and guidelines on how to have a safe Halloween without the risk of spreading the COVID-19 virus. The guidelines suggest to avoid trick-or-treating door-to-door. Learn more
  • Shalyse Olson, a parent, said distance learning isn’t working. She wants state leaders to allow families and teachers to pursue in-person learning if they choose. Learn more
  • Public schools in the Portland metro area can't have students back in the classroom full-time yet based on coronavirus cases and other public health metrics. But private schools can have kids back part-time. Learn more

12:45 p.m.

  • Health officials reported 363 new cases of COVID-19 in Oregon and one new death. The state's death toll is now 560 people. Learn more

12:20 p.m.

  • The Portland City Council unanimously adopted an extension of residential eviction protections for renters through Jan. 8, 2021. The eviction ban also allows a six-month repayment period for rent payments missed between Oct. 1 and Jan. 8. Learn more

9:30 a.m.

  • A group of Clackamas County parents are rallying this afternoon for a safe return to school for their children. Organizers of Clack to School said the rally will be at the Clackamas Town Center at 12:30 p.m. Learn more
  • COVID-19 infections reported at Oregon schools will now be released publicly as part of the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) weekly report. In the first COVID-19 Grade School Report, six schools listed at least one case of a student or staff member infected with the coronavirus. Learn more
  • There are 61 active COVID-19 workplace outbreaks in Oregon as this week. The six largest active outbreaks are at food processing facilities and correctional facilities. Learn more
