PORTLAND, Ore. — A man brandishing a knife was shot and killed late Thursday evening by Washington County deputies who were responding to a domestic violence call.

Deputies were dispatched at 10:37 p.m. to the West Slope Apartments in the 8500 block of Southwest Canyon Lane on reports of yelling coming from one of the apartments, the sheriff's office said in a prepared statement.

Deputies spoke with a woman who lived in the apartment, then contacted a man in the apartment. While taking the man into custody, he brandished a large kitchen knife, deputies said. A struggle began and deputies shot the man.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office said a deputy's body-worn camera showed a Taser was used on the man during the struggle. The shock device was ineffective, and the man was moving toward deputies when he was shot, the sheriff's office said.

Deputies started life-saving efforts while paramedics were en route but the man died, police said.

Names of the deputies and the man who was killed will be released at a later date.
