Woman hit by DUII suspect and pinned between cars may lose her legs, court docs say

The victim was hospitalized with serious leg injuries after the crash Monday in Southeast Portland; Hayley R. Jean, 34, faces DUII and other charges

PORTLAND, Ore. — A driver who police said was intoxicated plowed into a woman in Southeast Portland on Monday afternoon, badly crushing her legs.

The victim, 75-year-old Barbara Ann Stuva, suffered "extremely severe" injuries, a Portland police spokesman told KGW on Monday night. According to court documents, she may need to have her legs amputated.

Officers were dispatched to a report of a pedestrian-involved crash in the 4800 block of Southeast Steele Street at 1:17 p.m. They found Stuva, who was crushed between two cars.

Stuva had been standing behind her car, which police said was "properly parked," on one side of Steele Street and getting items out of her trunk. Another car, driven by the suspect, 35-year-old Hayley R. Jean of Portland, ran into the victim and her car, pinning her between two cars.

According to court documents, Jean told police that she was "on Methadone," and the officer said he noticed recent injection sites on her body. The officer also said there were bottles labeled as Methadone in Jean's car. She failed standard field sobriety tests.

The officer said Jean fell asleep many times during the investigation and "appeared disinterested and unconcerned with the victim's condition."
