Friday Night Flights: What to watch for in the 2nd round of the high school football playoffs

Here's what you should know heading into the second round of the high school football playoffs. Watch highlights on Friday Night Flights with Orlando Sanchez.

PORTLAND, Ore. — The second round of the high school football playoffs begins on Friday. 

KGW will have highlights of the second round on Friday Night Flights with Orlando Sanchez. The high school football show airs during KGW News at 11 on Friday night.

Here's a preview of the games:

Oregon 6A

(16) Mountainside at (1) Tigard, 7 p.m. 

After winning its first playoff game last week, 7-3 Mountainside visits the top-seeded and undefeated Tigers. Both teams play really good defensively, ranked in the top five in points allowed. Tigard dominated No. 32 seed Century 56-20 in the opening round. Mountainside knocked off No. 17 Clackamas 17-7.

(18) Liberty at (2) Jesuit, 7 p.m.

Thanks to a field goal in the final seconds, Liberty beat No. 15 Grant 52-49. The Crusaders gave up only 35 yards in the first half against No. 31 Oregon City last week. They won 56-9. Liberty and Jesuit last met during the 2017 regular season, a win for the Crusaders.

(19) West Salem at (3) Lake Oswego, 7 p.m.

West Salem had a mild upset over 14th-seeded Sunset last week, 28-14. Lake Oswego topped No. 30 Grants Pass 55-33 in the first round. These teams met back in Week 1, a 42-21 Lakers win down in Salem.

(13) Newberg at (4) Central Catholic, 7 p.m.

Central Catholic beat No. 29 Southridge 63-21 last week to advance. Cade Knighton threw for four touchdowns in the win. Newberg beat No. 20 South Medford 28-0, the Tigers' fifth shutout of year. Newberg has given up the fewest points in all of 6A. 

(12) Sherwood at (5) West Linn, 7 p.m.

Ethan Coleman threw for 400+ yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions to help West Linn beat No. 28 Roosevelt last week. Those numbers are impressive, but West Linn will want to limit the turnovers against a Bowmen team that features one of the state's better defenses and can control the ball with their wing-T offense.These teams played during the regular season, with West Linn winning 52-27.

(22) Lakeridge at (6) Aloha, 7 p.m.

The Pacers are the lowest seed left in the tournament. They upset No. 11 Beaverton in big fashion last week, 48-27.  Aloha scored 63 points against No. 27 Bend last week. Aloha  Lakeridge last reached the quarterfinals in 2013. Aloha last reached the quarterfinals in 2010, when they won the state championship. 

(10) North Medford at (7) Tualatin, 7 p.m.

The Black Tornado were almost the second Medford team to get upset by Reynolds in as many years. North Medford had to rally from 13 points down in the fourth quarter to win the game in overtime last week. Tualatin held off a strong start from No. 26 Westview to win 69-27.

(9) Barlow at (8) Sheldon, 7 p.m. 

Barlow outlasted No. 19 Glencoe 19-14 last week to advance to the second round. The Bruins were up 19-0 going into the 4th quarter, before the game got close late. Sheldon beat No. 25 Jefferson 35-0 in the first round.

Oregon 5A

We're into the quarterfinals here.

(8) Wilsonville at (1) Thurston, 7 p.m.

It wasn't easy, but Wilsonville broke out to score 27 points in the second half to beat No. 9 North Bend 34-14. The defense got four interceptions from Mason Dean. They'll need a stout defense this week. Thurston, who is undefeated, has had a strong offense all season, scoring 30+ points every week.  They beat No. 16 Corvallis 61-21 last week. 

(7) Parkrose at (2) Crater, 7 p.m.

Parkrose won its first ever playoff game last week, beating Lebanon 59-20. They now get to make the long drive down to Central Point to face a Crater team that went 8-1, losing only to No. 1 Thurston. They beat HIllsboro 49-0 last week, their 5th shutout of the year.

(6) Ashland at (3) West Albany, 7 p.m.

Ashland beat No. 11 Dallas 50-19 last week. They travel north to face an undefeated West Albany team who beat Redmond 56-13 in the first round.

(12) Scappoose at (4) Silverton, 7 p.m.

Third time was the charm for the Scappoose Indians. After losing the first matchups against the Buckaroos, Scappoose finally beat Pendleton 23-14.  Next up is a Silverton team who beat No. 13 La Salle Prep 55-7 last week. The Foxes' only loss this season came to No. 3 West Albany.

Oregon 4A

Friday

  • No. 6 Gladstone at No. 3 La Grande, 7 p.m.
  • No. 5 Marist Catholic at No. 4 North Marion, 7 p.m.

Saturday

  • No. 9 Baker at No. 1 Banks, 1 p.m.
  • No. 15 Tillamook at No. 10 The Dalles, 1 p.m.

Washington 4A

(14) Union at (3) Lake Stevens, 1 p.m. Saturday

Union beat Lake Stevens in last year's 4A state championship game. Lake Stevens was actually ranked No. 1 by most polls all season, but the selection committee dropped them down to No. 3. They beat Tahoma 49-14 last week in the districts. Union beat Mount Rainier 42-6. The winner here moves on to get the winner of Mount Si at Chiawana.

(9) Skyview at (8) Woodinville, 1 p.m. Saturday 

Woodinville won at Emerald Ridge last week 45-21. They went 8-1 in regular season, finishing second in the KingCo's Crown division. Skyview blew out Federal Way 49-0 last week. The winner faces the winner of Wenatchee vs. Kennedy Catholic.

(15) Eastmont at (2) Camas, 2 p.m. Saturday

Eastmont is out of Wenatchee. They finished tied for first in the Big 9 conference with a 9-1 record (5-1 in league).  Camas, who is undefeated this season, dominated Olympia 48-13 last week.  Winner plays the winner of Eastlake vs. Puyallup. 

Washington 3A

(16) Kelso at (1) O'Dea, 5 p.m. Friday 

The selection committee gave our local schools no favors.  Kelso is in as the last seed and gets to take on an O'Dea squad that went 9-0 in the regular season and beat Ferndale 42-7 in the districts last week.  They gave up 81 points total during the regular season. Kelso finished 7-2, with their only losses coming to Prairie and Hockinson (one of the best 2A teams).  They beat Spanaway Lake 33-26 in the districts. Winner here advances to play the winner of Penninsula and Mt. Spokane.

(11) Prairie at (6) Marysville-Pilchuck, 6 p.m. Friday

After an 8-1 regular season and a 73-35 win over Capital in the districts, Prairie still finds itself as only the No. 11 seed. Marysville-Pilchuck went 9-0 in regular season, and beat Ballard 28-25 in the districts last week.

Washington 2A

Friday

  • Ridgefield at Steilacoom, 7 p.m.

Saturday

  • Washougal at Clarkston, 2 p.m.
  • Ellensburg at Hockinson, 3 p.m.
