'I was scared to death': Thief steals woman's SUV with 6-year-old grandson inside

The suspect pulled over after driving a few blocks and told the child to get out. Thankfully, the child is safe and reunited with his family.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Teri Stinson was driving her grandson around and decided to stop off at a house her parents used to live in near Southeast 158th Avenue and Southeast Alder Street.

She said she told her 6-year-old grandson Jack to stay in the car while she talked with the current homeowner. She gave him her phone to let him play with. She said she was no more than a few feet from the hood of the car when a man climbed into the driver's seat and drove off with Jack sitting in the back.

"I was scared." Jack said. "He probably went like 70-85 miles an hour." That was Jack's description of what happened. He said the man pulled over and told Jack to get out. Jack stood on the side of the road all alone with his grandma's phone in hand.

Meanwhile, back where the SUV was stolen, Stinson was beside herself.

"I was crying a lot. I was scared to death. You always hear the horror stories. You always hear the horror stories and I was scared to death something was going to happen to him," she said.

Thankfully, Jack was able to call his dad on the phone and that helped police find him and reunite the family.

Portland police said they found the SUV ditched near Southeast 157th Avenue and Southeast Alder Street, but the man was nowhere to be found.

Jack described him as a man with dark skin, dark hair and wearing blue jeans.
