Community gathers at Longview church to watch fallen deputy's memorial

Classmates, teachers and other law enforcement officers showed up to honor the fallen deputy.

LONGVIEW, Wash — Newlife Church in Longview opened their doors to anyone wanting to watch a live stream of Deputy Justin DeRosier's memorial service Wednesday.

Classmates, teachers and other law enforcement officers showed up to honor the fallen deputy.

"I think it's not only important for the family of the fallen officers that we honor, but also the community in general that we show -- that we recognize the sacrifice that was made,"  said Sgt. Fred Neiman of Clark County Sheriff's office.

Cortney Lemiere was a year behind Justin at Kelso High School.

"He was a good dude, he always has been. Likes to laugh. Everybody kind of seemed to like him. Got along with people pretty well," said Lemiere.

Wednesday they honored their local hero, watching from afar, but keeping the man they knew and respected close to their hearts.

"It really hits home. He's very well respected and I think it's very important to respect that he served," Longview resident Brad Silvernail said.

Schools in Kelso were closed for the day so teachers and students could attend the service.
