Suspect arrested after threatening C-TRAN bus driver, demanding ride to Portland

There were no passengers on the bus, according to a C-TRAN spokeswoman.

VANCOUVER, Washington — A man threatened a C-TRAN bus driver Friday evening, saying that he had a gun and demanding the driver take him to Portland, according to Washington State Patrol.

Sean O’Neill, who captured of video of the chase, could hardly believe what had happened.

“You don't see that every day,” O’Neill said. “You definitely don't see it in Vancouver.”

The scary situation played at around 6 p.m. on Friday. Vancouver police were dispatched to the area of Northeast Covington Road and Fourth Plain Boulevard where a man boarded a C-TRAN bus, implied he had a gun and demanded to be taken to Portland.

Trooper Will Finn said the bus driver complied with the man's demand and headed southbound on Interstate 205. The driver had been westbound on State Route 500. Spike strips were put down at the north end of the Glenn Jackson Bridge, but were not effective.

“One officer threw the spike strips out and it looks like he drove over them and that's when everything stopped and we drove to the side of the road,” O’Neill said.

The bus continued and entered Interstate 205 where it encountered heavy traffic on the bridge. Officers were able to get in front of the bus and stop it, police said.

Anthony S. Lybeck, 31, was then taken into custody without incident and booked into the Clark County Jail on kidnapping charges.

There were no passengers on the bus, according to Christine Selk with C-TRAN.

No one was hurt.

Traffic was backed up on southbound Interstate 205.
