Man killed by The Dalles police after allegedly firing rifle at neighbor's house

THE DALLES, Ore — A 77-year-old man who was allegedly firing a rifle at his neighbor's house was shot and killed by police in The Dalles Saturday night.

At about 9:59 p.m., officers with the City of The Dalles Police Department responded to a shots fired call at 1921 East 10th Street.

Witnesses had told police that the man who lived at that address was outside shooting a rifle at his neighbor's residence.

Officers heard gunshots as they arrived and saw a man later identified as homeowner James Young standing on his porch. Young shot rounds from the rifle as they watched him. 

Police reported that an officer from The Dalles Police Department shot the male subject "at some point during the incident." 

Officers attempted first aid on Young, but he succumbed to his injuries.

There were no other citizens or police officers injured. The officer involved in the shooting was put on administrative leave, standard protocol in an officer-involved shooting. 

The investigation is being conducted in accordance with Senate Bill 111 by detectives assigned to the Gorge Major Crimes Team, comprised of officers from area police departments and sheriff's offices, the Wasco County District Attorney's Office and the Oregon State Police.
