Freezing rain, snow leads to school delays in Columbia River Gorge

One to two inches of snow fell in Hood River and The Dalles, with greater amounts in the upper Hood River Valley.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Snow and freezing rain fell in the Columbia River Gorge as a storm passed through the area Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

A Winter Weather Advisory was in effect in for Oregon and Washington counties in the gorge through 10 a.m. Thursday.

School districts in some areas delayed or canceled classes as a result. The South Wasco and Sherman districts canceled school for the day. The Hood River County and North Wasco districts were on two-hour delays. Other smaller districts delayed as well.

As eighth grader Gavin Turner waited for his bus, he said he was ready to get on with his school day.

“I guess just normal school stuff, hanging out with friends and doing math and reading and whatever else we got to do,” said Turner.

The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to crashes on Interstate 84 east of Bridal Veil due to the wintry conditions.

One to two inches of snow fell in Hood River and The Dalles, with greater amounts in the upper Hood River Valley. The NWS expected 2-4 inches of snow in higher elevation areas such as Parkdale.

For the most part, the frozen precipitation let up by dawn. KGW meteorologist Rod Hill expects rain for the lower elevations in the gorge Thursday afternoon..
