'It’s gonna be a lot of change,': Huge new development planned for NW Portland

Three concept designs are being presented at public meetings around the area. The final choice is expected by mid-January.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Three conceptual designs have emerged for the future of the “Broadway Corridor” a major redevelopment in northwest Portland.

Chuck Slothower, a reporter with The Daily Journal of Commerce has studied the project and said it will be large and unique.

“There's nothing like it in the whole region so it’s really gonna set the tone for what old town, Chinatown and the Pearl District looks like --even 40-50 years from now,” he said.

Portland-based ZGF Architects created the three concepts for the 34 acre development.

One is called “Play.” It envisions ball fields among affordable housing and market price housing and office buildings.

Another concept called “Nature” focuses more on trees and gardens and landscaped paths.

A third would focus attention on the Broadway Bridge and the nearby train depot, Union Station.

The three concepts are being presented at public meetings around the area. The final choice is expected by mid-January.

But there is still time to let your voice be heard said Shawn Uhlman, Public Affairs Manager for Prosper Portland

‘It’s gonna be a lot of change,” he said. “I think the good part is that we've really tried to be deliberate and thoughtful in this and we really have lots of opportunities for folks to engage, give us their opinion this is not set in stone yet.”
