What started out as a dry, sunny day, took a sudden turn late afternoon Sunday when a thunderstorm started to roll through the Portland metro area.
In the back yard of a Lake Oswego home, wind brought a tree down during a Father’s Day gathering.
Ed Allen said he was manning the barbecue at Nancy Sanchez’s home on Tualata Avenue when a branch came down. He and 15 other people took that as a cue to get inside. Then they watched from inside as the 85-foot tall tree fell toward them, crushing the grill but just barely missing the home.
Nobody was hurt. The group took it in stride and ordered pizza, using the downed tree as a bench to eat their meal.
Power outages were still being reported across the area Monday morning.

Temperatures reached 90 degrees in many spots inland and the upper 70s on the coast.
The coast is expected to cool down Monday, with temperatures in the 60s. Winds from the south will bring more clouds Sunday night and Monday morning.
Everywhere else will be hot, though, with temperatures hovering in the low 90s. The Cascades will continue to see a chance of showers and thunderstorms until Wednesday.
Temperatures should drop in the low 80s and upper 70s on Thursday and into next weekend.
