University of Oregon student found dead at Shasta Lake

Deputies said there were no signs of foul play and nothing about the student's death appeared to be suspicious.

SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. – A University of Oregon student was found dead Saturday morning at Shasta Lake in northern California.

Deputies were called to the Gooseneck Campground at about 8:45 a.m. on a report that a man wasn’t breathing. The student, 21-year-old Dylan Pietrs, was found inside a small tent by other students.

Pietrs was given CPR but could not be resuscitated, according to the Shasta County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said there were no signs of foul play and nothing about Pietr's death appeared to be suspicious.

It's not yet known if alcohol consumption contributed Pietr's death, the sheriff's office said. A coroner will determine his cause of death.

Pietrs was a business administration major and a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, according to the University of Oregon.

On Sunday, the university said it regretted the "insensitive tone" of an initial statement released by the Division of Student Life after Pietrs' death.

The original statement contained the following paragraph: "As devastating as this sudden passing is, it is important to point out that this tragedy is connected to an unauthorized tradition among many college students. Students from many institutions have a history of demonstrating poor life choices during visits to Lake Shasta."

There will be counseling support for students in need. Click here to visit the University of Oregon's Counseling Center web page.
