Sheriff's deputies tracked Scott M. Smith to an apartment complex in Gresham.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Authorities say a Multnomah County Jail inmate who stole a truck and drove away from his work crew in Portland on March 22 was arrested on March 24 in Gresham.

A Multnomah County grand jury indicted Scott M. Smith, 25, on two counts of second-degree escape, one count of unauthorized use of a vehicle and one count of first-degree theft.

Smith was with a crew cleaning up a green space in the 9400 block of Northeast Hancock Drive, near Hancock Park, when he stole a work truck belonging to the Oregon Department of Transportation, according to the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office.

The ODOT truck was unlocked and running when it was stolen.

Police and sheriff’s deputies found the truck near Northeast 52nd Avenue and Broadway Street, but Smith got away.

Smith was serving a 90-day parole violation sanction for an original charge of identity theft.

Smith's girlfriend was also arrested on one count of hindering prosecution.
