Portland police: Recent gang shootings connected to homicide

Police believe 80-90 percent of them stem from one homicide that happened downtown about a month ago.

PORTLAND, Ore. – A gang shooting in Northeast Portland on Wednesday evening is one of several connected to a man's homicide last month, police said.

Officers responded to a report of gunfire found a wounded man near Northeast 79th Avenue and Glisan Street. Medics took the man to a hospital. Police expect him to survive.

Officers searched the neighborhood and found several homes and one vehicle had been hit by gunfire on 79th Avenue. No other victims have been located.

The shooting is tied to the homicide of Davonte Kerney in downtown Portland last month.

In the last month, there have been 15-20 suspected gang shootings in Portland. Police believe 80-90 percent of them stem from Kerney's death.

There have been five suspected gang shootings in the past 48 hours, all in North or Northeast Portland, police say, and they believe those five shootings are also tied to Kerney's homicide.

Police said a white vehicle was seen leaving the area after shots were fired Wednesday.

Investigators do not believe there is a current danger to the community.
