Police identify man shot to death in Pearl District

The man's death is the sixth homicide in Portland this year.

PORTLAND, Ore. – A man was shot and killed in the Pearl District neighborhood Wednesday night.

Portland police said gunfire was reported in the 200 block of Northwest 8th Avenue at 8:17 p.m.

The man was taken to a Portland hospital, where he died a short time later. He was identified as 22-year-old Davonte D. Kerney.

Kerney's death is the sixth homicide in Portland this year.

Police have not released suspect information. They do not believe the shooting was random or that the public is in danger.

But the deadly gunfire has neighbors rattled.

"I've lived in this neighborhood for five years and I feel like violence is getting worse and worse. You never know what's going to happen," said Sigrun Torfason, who saw the shooting victim loaded into an ambulance.

An investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Detective Rico Beniga at 503-823-0457. A reward of $2,500 is beng offered to anyone who provides information that leads to an arrest.

Traffic was closed on Northwest Broadway and Park Avenue between Northwest Everett Street and Couch Street for several hours overnight.
