The burning question in Philly: Will Chip Kelly be back as coach of the Eagles?

USA TODAY
Eagles coach Chip Kelly.

We asked the USA TODAY NFL staff the following question: "Is Chip Kelly done in Philadelphia, either by his choice or the team’s choice?" Their responses:

CHRIS D'AMICO

I think it could come down to whether owner Jeffrey Lurie takes away the GM title. But that is not his style. People forget Kelly went 10-6 his first two seasons, so it has not been a complete disaster in Philly during his time there. So I say he gives it at least one more season, and we will see what he has learned about being a GM. Note to Chip: Don’t ignore the offensive line again.

MICHAEL MIDDLEHURST-SCHWARTZ

It's too soon to say Kelly's time in Philadelphia is already wrapped up, but it sure doesn't look good. He created his own mess with an overhauled roster that has glaring holes and has yet to jell. Even if he has the opportunity to return, would he want to attempt another offseason reboot to restore his standing? With plenty of colleges and potentially other NFL opportunities, Kelly would be better off getting a fresh start elsewhere.

Still too soon to say. Chip can leave anytime he wants and there will be a top-flight college job waiting. But does he want to give up now and have that disappointment on his resume? He’s as tight-lipped as anyone in football, so nobody truly knows what he’s thinking. The Eagles’ viewpoint surely will have a lot to do with how the season ends up. Bad as it looks now, they’re still just a game back of the division lead.

LORENZO REYES

It’s just a touch too early for me to say he’s done. A loss to the Lions, though, might change that. The Eagles, as bad as they have been the last two weeks, are still just one game back in the NFC East. There may be plenty of angst in Philly – deservedly so – but it will be hard to dump your head coach and the man with final say in personnel matters, if he wins the division and takes the franchise to the playoffs. What is clear, however, is that some changes are necessary for the Eagles to compete in the future.
