Lloyd McClendon fired as Mariners manager

USA TODAY Sports
Lloyd McClendon became Seattle's manager prior to the 2014 season.

Lloyd McClendon is out as manager of the Seattle Mariners.

In two seasons in Seattle, McClendon had a record of 163-161, but his status was in doubt after general manager Jack Zduriencik was fired. Former Los Angeles Angels manager Jerry Dipoto was hired last week as the Mariners' new GM and opted not to retain McClendon.

Managerial upheaval has been the norm in Seattle, as McClendon's replacement will be the ninth manager since the Mariner last made the playoffs in 2001. McClendon is the first Seattle manager to depart with a winning record since Lou Piniella - who went 840-711 in 10 seasons there - departed in a trade to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2003.

The Seattle Times, which first reported McClendon's dismissal, indicated Angels special assistant Tim Bogar is the favorite to take over for McClendon.
